The Girl Next Door Chapter 23

That night, after her family went to church and ate dinner, Kate and Neal went to Erik’s for the Christmas party. He had moved into an apartment a few weeks before, and was hoping to stay in Pittsburgh. All the guys that did not go home for Christmas were at the party.
“Katie!” Maxime drunkenly called out when she walked in the room.
“Max!” she called back, returning the hug he was giving her.
“Hey Erik,” she said, smiling, as he walked towards her.
“Hey Katie,” he said with a huge grin on his face. “Hey, Cara?”
A girl walked over towards Erik, and he put his arm around her.
“Cara, this is Kate, and her brother Neal,” he introduced. “Kate, Neal, this is my girlfriend Cara. Katie here is dating Sid.””Nice to meet you,” they told each other, shaking each other’s hands.
“Hey you guys, wanna beer?” Erik asked the two of them.
“Sure,” Neal said.
“No thanks, I’ve gotta drive what will be his drunken ass home tonight,” Kate said, pointing at Neal.
They laughed, and that’s when Erik asked, “Kate, what’s in the containers?”
“Oh,” Kate said, looking down at the containers she had put on a chair. “I made cookies for you guys, I figured you’d like them.”
At the mention of homemade food, everything went silent, and every single one of the guys walked over to Kate, and Kate picked up the containers.
“Dude,” Ryan Whitney said, “how long has it been since we’ve had homemade food?”
“I can’t remember,” Michel Ouellet said.
“Well, you guys don’t have to stare at them,” she said. “You can eat some if you want!”
At that moment, Maxime took the containers from Kate, and put them over on the bed. The covers were torn off in a frenzy, as the guys began to eat the cookies.
“Kate,” Maxime began, “anytime you wanna make cookies, you go right ahead!”
“Oh thanks,” Kate told him, laughing at how the guys were eating the cookies so quickly.
Kate turned to Cara, and they rolled their eyes at each other. It was then that the two of them started talking (they were the only girls at the party), and they talked for most of the night, finding that they had a lot in common.

By the end of the night, all of the cookies were gone. Apparently, some of the guys had taken them and hidden them for later, because it was homemade food, something all of them missed. After midnight, Kate had to practically carry Neal out of Erik’s apartment and down to the car. She wished the guys a Merry Christmas, told them all she’d be seeing them in a couple days (including Cara, who was staying until New Year’s Day), and left. Her parents had told her to be home by 1am, and they made it home with ten minutes to spare. Everyone was asleep, so Kate and Neal just knocked on their parents’ door, told them they were home, and then went to bed.
