So, on their long walk, Sidney showed Kate a lot of places, and she met a few of his families’ friends, as well as some of the people he grew up with. Everyone was really nice, and Kate could tell how comfortable Sidney was here.
“You are so much more comfortable here, I can just tell,” Kate said as they walked hand-in-hand.
“Its home,” he replied. “No one here is going to report on who I’m with or what I’m doing, it’s just different here. I’m not Sidney Crosby, the NHLer here; I’m Sidney Crosby, the kid that grew up down the street. I like that.”
“I like it here, it’s so nice and quiet, everyone’s so down to earth and nice. I can see why you love it so much.”
Sidney just smiled in response.
“So, I called my trainer, and I’m taking tomorrow off,” he said as they walked up to his house.
“Wait, Sidney Crosby, taking a day off?” Kate mocked shock.
“I haven’t in a long time, and I want you to meet some of my friends tomorrow. You’ll like them.”
“Sounds good to me,” Kate replied, smiling up at Sidney.
They went into his house through the garage, and went into the basement.
“So, this is the legendary basement, huh?” Kate said, taking it all in.
“This is it,” he replied, picking up a stick off the ground. “Want to shoot?”
“Sure,” Kate replied, taking the stick from him. She lined up a few pucks, and took some shots. All but one went into the net; one went wide left and sure enough, it hit the new dryer Sidney had bought for his mom. Luckily, there were already some other dents in it.
“Don’t sweat it; those were caused by me. At least the knobs haven’t broken off yet,” Sidney laughed. Sidney took a few shots as well, and then they headed upstairs and watched television with the rest of the family. One by one, Trina, Troy, and Taylor all went to bed, leaving Sidney and Kate alone. They didn’t do anything though; they just cuddled up on the couch and watched for awhile. Around midnight, Kate said that she was tired and heading to bed, so Sidney decided to go to bed then too. Kate went into her room and changed, and then headed out to the bathroom in the hallway with everything she needed. As she was taking out her contacts, she heard a knock on the door, and opened it up.
“Have to brush my teeth,” he said, coming into the bathroom.
“I would hope so,” Kate laughed as she put her glasses on.
They both brushed their teeth, and once they were done, they left the bathroom, and Sidney grabbed her hand and led her to his room.
“Your parents are right down the hall!” she whispered as he shut the door.
“Oh, I’m well aware,” he replied, turning down the sheets on his bed. He motioned for her to come to the bed.
“I’ll stay, but just for a little bit,” Kate said as she lay down on the bed next to him. He pulled her close, and as they faced each other, they kissed. They laid there for awhile, just kissing, and then when they stopped, Kate rolled onto her other side, and snuggled up next to Sidney as he wrapped his arm protectively around her waist.
The next thing Kate knew, it was five in the morning. Realizing she was still with Sidney, she lifted his arm up off of her waist, and got up out of bed. Sidney stirred, but didn’t wake up. She snuck back into her room, and slept until nine, when she heard a little knock on the door.

The Girl Next Door Chapter 62
“Well, nice to see you too,” Kate said in response to his reaction.
“You didn’t tell me you were coming,” he said, closing the door and walking towards Kate with a big smile on his face.
“It’s a long story,” Kate replied. “I missed you.”
Kate could tell that he had missed her too as he leaned in and kissed her. Kate leaned back on the bed and he rolled on top of her as they continued to kiss. A few minutes later, as Sidney moved his right hand under her shirt and up her back, they heard a knock on the door.
“So, I don’t hear talking,” Trina said through the door.
“We’re talking Mom,” Sidney replied, his face beet red in embarrassment.
“Let’s not forget that I’m right down the hall, as is your ten year old sister,” Trina continued.
“We’ll be out in a second,” Sidney replied. That reassured Trina and they heard her walk back down the hall a second later, and Sidney got up. “Sorry about that.”
“It’s fine,” Kate said, sitting up and running her fingers through her hair. “So, how was training today?”
“It went well,” he replied as he changed his shirt. “You ever going to tell me how you got here?”
“I took a plane.”
“Smartass.” He leaned in and kissed her again.
“Our parents apparently had this planned for weeks. And you’ll be happy to know I’m here for a week, so you’ll have to deal with my smartass ways for that long.” Kate laughed as she opened the door, and Sidney wrapped his arms around her waist to stop her. She turned around and faced him.
“I’m glad you came,” he said as he kissed her yet again.
A few seconds later, they heard a “Why don’t you two go get a room?”
“Taylor, shut up,” Sidney replied. They broke apart, and they walked hand-in-hand to the kitchen.
“So, Mom, what’s for dinner?” Sidney asked.
“Of course that’s your first question for me,” Trina laughed. “We’re having grilled chicken, so naturally, you’re making that. I already started the grill, your dad will be home any minute. We’re also having potatoes and green beans.”
“Can I help with anything?” Kate asked.
“Sure,” Trina responded, smiling. “Could you make the salad?”
“Sure,” Kate replied.
“I already have everything out over there,” Trina said, pointing to a counter. “I need you to chop everything up and then just mix it with the bags of salad mix.”
“No problem.” Kate got to work on the salad as Sidney checked on the grill.
“So, Mom, why didn’t you tell me Kate was coming?”
“Sid, haven’t you ever heard of a surprise? It was kind of obvious that you missed her, the way you were moping around the house.”
Kate laughed as Sidney blushed. “I was not moping around the house,” he replied.
“Yes, you were. So we decided to call Tom and Sarah and see if we could do something about that. They didn’t tell Kate until yesterday that she was coming, so this was a surprise for her too.”
When Sidney was about to put the chicken on the grill, Kate finished up the salad, and Troy got home.
“Kate, nice to see you!” he said as he walked over and gave her a hug.
“Nice to see you too, thanks for having me.”
“Well, it’s our pleasure. It’s nice not to see Sidney moping around.”
“Dad, I was not moping.” He put the pieces of chicken on the grill.
“Okay, Sid.” Troy winked at Kate and she laughed as he headed back inside.
“So,” Kate said as she stood next to Sidney, “I guess you can’t live without me, huh?”
“Oh yeah, you know it,” he said, laughing. The two of them stood there as he grilled the chicken, and Kate leaned up against him.
Soon, the chicken was done, and Sidney brought it in and placed it on the table, which Taylor had set. They sat down and said grace, and then they dug in.
“So Kate, how were your flights today?” Troy asked as he got his food.
“Good. I had to run to catch my flight to Halifax, but other than that it was good.”
“And how was your family?” Sidney asked with a sly grin on his face.
Kate rolled her eyes, and told a few stories. Everyone laughed, and that brought up more stories about their families. After dinner, Trina made Taylor do the dishes so Kate and Sidney could catch up.
“Want to go for a walk? I’ll show you around,” Sidney asked.
“Sure, I’d love to,” Kate replied, giving his hand a quick squeeze.
“You didn’t tell me you were coming,” he said, closing the door and walking towards Kate with a big smile on his face.

The Girl Next Door Chapter 61
A week later, Kate and her parents were in the car on their way to Minneapolis (a sixteen hour drive), and they stopped in Chicago on the way to visit old friends for a night, breaking up the awful drive. The next day, they made it to Minneapolis in the early afternoon, and stayed at her mother’s parents’ house for two days before heading up to Roseau to see her dad’s family.
During their week in Roseau, Kate water-skied, drove her family’s boat, and had a chance to hang out with her cousins whom she had not seen for a long time. But soon, it was time to head back down to Minneapolis to spend more time with her mom’s family. On the drive down, she got a phone call.
“Hello?”
“Hey Kate, it’s Trina.”
“Trina, hi!” Kate replied
“How’s Minnesota?”
“It’s good. Nice and warm. It’s only rained once so far, so it’s been great. How’s Cole Harbour?”
“Good, it’s actually why I’m calling. Sidney won’t admit it, but I know he misses you terribly. He’s having fun and all, but he misses you.”
Kate didn’t know what to say.
“I know you miss him too, so I’m inviting you up for the week. I’ve already talked to your parents; this has been planned for a few weeks now. You’re taking an eight o’clock flight tomorrow morning to Toronto, and then flying into Halifax, and you’ll be getting in around three-thirty.”
Kate had a huge smile on her face, and was speechless.
“Now,” Trina continued, “Sidney has absolutely no idea you’re coming up, and I’d like to keep it that way. His training is later tomorrow, so he won’t be home until around five. Taylor and I will be waiting for you outside of security, and at that point we can take you to baggage claim and head home. Does that sound good?”
“It sounds amazing! Mom, Dad, why didn’t you tell me?” she asked her parents.
“We agreed to keep it a surprise until we were heading back down to Minneapolis,” Sarah explained, also with a smile on her face.
“Trina, thanks so much! I can’t wait to see you guys tomorrow!” Kate said, grinning from ear to ear.
“Not a problem, sweetie, see you then!”
“Okay, bye!” Kate clicked her phone shut.
“So, I guess you have some laundry to do, right?” Sarah asked.
“Dad, can you pick up the speed a little bit? I have some stuff to do,” Kate laughed. “Mom, Dad, thanks so much.”
“We knew you’d like that,” Tom said as he picked up the speed. “You’re welcome.”
*****
The next morning, Kate was at the airport by six, but had no trouble getting out of bed and getting ready. Her clothes were washed, her bags were packed, and she was excited to be going to Cole Harbour. She couldn’t wait to see the look on Sidney’s face when he walked through the door and saw her there.
Miraculously, Kate’s flight left on time, and adding an hour with the time change, Kate got into Toronto a little before eleven. She had to run to make her connecting flight to Halifax, which left at eleven-thirty. She arrived in Halifax at three-thirty, and sure enough, waiting outside of security were Trina and Taylor. Taylor ran up to Kate and gave her a hug.
“Hey Taylor!” Kate said, smiling. “How’s it going?”
“Good,” Taylor said as their hug ended. “I didn’t tell Sid you were coming!”
“And you did a great job,” Trina replied. “How were your flights?”
Kate hugged Trina as she replied, “Good. I slept for most of my flight to Toronto, so that made it go a lot faster.”
“Well, let’s head down to baggage claim! How many bags?”
“Just one,” Kate replied. “But it’s big.”
They retrieved Kate’s bag and then headed out to the car. As they drove to Cole Harbour, Trina and Taylor played tour guide, and pointed out a lot of things on the way. Kate couldn’t believe how beautiful it was; she loved it.
When they got home, they showed Kate where she would be staying, and she unpacked her belongings, putting them into drawers and hanging a few things in the closet. When she was done, she walked into the family room, where Taylor was watching television. She sat down with her as Trina did some ironing. Kate told them new stories about her family, which made everyone laugh. They didn’t have too much time to talk, because a little after five, Kate heard the front door swing open.
“I’m home!” Sidney called out.
“Kate, go hide in his room, he always drops his bag off in there before doing anything else,” Trina whispered. “It’s right next to yours. Go!”
Kate hustled to Sidney’s room, closing the door and sitting on his bed.
“I’ll be right back Mom,” she heard Sidney say. “I just have to drop my gear off in my room.”
Kate heard footsteps coming towards her, and then she saw the door swing open, and as Sidney saw her, he dropped his bag, as well as his jaw.

From the brink of Disaster to Paradise - Day Twenty Nine - Support and Love
I started back to school. I am expanding to learn sports therapy. Between that and work I am busy but yet I still wish I had my baby to take care of. It’s hard to get out of bed everyday. The women I work with are amazing help though. They pray for me and offer support. My boss, Maria, knows what it’s like to lose a child. She lost her daughter to a drunk driver 2 years ago. It was very hard she says and she’ll never forget her daughter but she had to move on with her life. She says it gets easier not just day by day but month by month. Slowly the pain will slip away and what’s left will be honor and remembrance.

From the brink of Disaster to Paradise - Day Fifteen - Moving On
How it feels, when the sacred is torn from your life (Natalie Grant-Held)
Things are starting to look up. Though I think about my baby every day, I am starting to move on. I just got a job as a nurse in the nursery at the hospital. On my break I slowly walk through the garden, reflecting on all that had happened. I remember 9 months ago, telling my parents that I was going to be a mommy. They freaked and pretty much disowned me. I was left to finish my semester at UNC with no financial support. My boyfriend wanted nothing to do with me. In fact he wanted me to get an abortion but I refused. He even threatened to take me himself. I was scared but I knew I needed this baby as much as it needed me. I placed a restraining order against him. Lot of good that did me.
This job is hard. Seeing new mothers with their babies makes me wish even more that I still had mine. It’s hard but I know God as a plan for me. As long as I believe in him and do my share of the work I know he will provide.

From the brink of Disaster to Paradise- Day Four - Closure Begins
Drip, Drip, Drip…
The rain just makes my day even worse. Today is my baby’s funeral. I bought an entire box of tissues just for the service and another for the burial. I got up around 8 for the 10 o’clock service. I quietly showered and got dresses purposely not wearing a lot of makeup.
Coming home that first night was especially hard. My baby’s stuff scattered around the apartment. From bottles to diapers I was totally ready. Now it is just staring me back in my face and laughing. I can’t stand to go anywhere near the room I had designated as the nursery.
Were asking why this happens to us
Who have died to live, it's unfair(Natalie Grant-Held)
The church service was amazing. The sermon was beautiful. The only bad thing is that it truly showed me how much I lost when I got pregnant. It was very lonely. We drove to the cemetery. I could barely see the road through my tears. As a last goodbye I took my son’s baby blanket and gently laid it over his tiny coffin. I was crying profusely. The funeral director handed me an envelope and I glanced inside. It contained a lock of his soft brown hair. As I walked away from the cemetery the sun began to peek through the clouds.

From the brink of Disaster to Paradise - Day One - Disaster Strikes
“He’s gone,” the nurse told me. I collapsed into the chair just sobbing.
To think that providence
Would take a child from his mother
While she prays, is appalling. (Held-Natalie Grant)
“He can’t be gone, he was never really here.” “I just don’t believe it.” “Why, why did God take the only thing I had going for me.” My words became incomprehensible at this point. I was an absolute wreck. My baby boy was gone, and he was only 2 weeks old. I know I need to be strong but I just can’t. I’ve lost everything. The only hope I had left was in him and now that’s gone too. Feeling totally overwhelmed I grabbed my coat and rushed out the door.
The hospital garden. My home for the past 3 hours. I couldn’t stand it anymore. The sanitized smell, white bare walls, and the hustle and bustle of the hospital irked me to no end. No one should have to bury their child. And yet, that’s exactly what I would have to do.

Dream...or Reality - Part 3
‘Oh yeah, I finally figured out who the boy that woke me up was. His name is Jared. And guess what he’s a STAAL! For those of you that live under a rock, the Staal’s are THE up and coming hockey family. There are 4 boys, 3 of which are currently in the NHL. Jared is the youngest among his 3 brothers: Eric of the hurricanes, Marc a ranger, and Jordan is a Penguin.'
After fully recovering from her little spill on the ice, Krista returned skating and maneuvering a puck around. For a girl she was actually pretty good. Maybe that’s why her uncle volunteered to take her. She can keep his boys in better shape than anyone else could.
“Hey Krista, I have a few errands to run. Would you mind running the boys through some drills when they get here?”
Krista agreed and her uncle told her to expect the boys any time now. Ok maybe not…so they are a little late. Whatever. She decided to warm herself up and began skating, carrying the puck with her. As she picked up speed she did little tricks dragging the puck behind her and picking it back up on her stick.
“Wow!”
That was all it took to get her attention. She stopped. Standing by the entrance to the ice was a half dressed Jared Staal.
“I thought I heard someone here. The rest of the guys are stuck waiting on an accident about 2 blocks away. I walked.” “Hey where’s coach.”
“Running errands. I’m in charge of practice today.”
‘Oh gosh, he really is gorgeous! It’s kind of distracting.’
“You up for some one-on-one, since I don’t think the rest of the team is going to make it?”
“Sure.”
“Should I tell the guys just to head back home?”
“Yeah, go ahead.”
“K be back in like 5 minutes,” he smiled.
“I’ll be here.”
‘Gosh what was I thinking?! Me being alone with him for at least an hour, not a good idea.’
Dream...or Reality - Part 2
‘What happened?’
She looked up and saw a roof staring back at her. Slowly sitting up she saw ice, a player’s bench, and faces looking down at her.
“Are you okay?” one of the boys asked her. “You took a pretty bad spill.”
‘So it was all a dream?’
“Where am I?”
“Sudbury, Ontario.”
‘Oh that’s right Brent and I broke up 5 months ago and I was having a hard time getting over him so my parents sent me to help my Uncle with his hockey team.’
